OFFICIAL SELECTION“THE INVISIBLE FLOATING ISLAND OF KIA KAI” Written by KeDeSol (Australia)BIO: Growing up, I was told by teachers and family members that I was stupid, an idiot, a retard and a moron, those being just a few descriptives that I remember. However, I didn't feel that I was any of those words; I knew I was different. In fact, I felt that I was smarter than most of those adults who felt empowered berating a child. I am Dyslexic/Neurodivergent and when I discovered that many important people throughout history are, too, I knew that I had a superpower and a bloody good imagination. I taught myself to read and write using music and memory in my teens and managed by paying attention when I didn't understand something. Those negative words linger in my head still today, but I don't believe them. I am a woman who has ridden many highways. I am not invisible. I do know stuff, and I have numerous stories to tell. But she soon realises that it's not paradise. SHORT SYNOPSIS: Diana, a young doctor, lived with her sick mother, Lillian, until she passed away. While packing up her belongings, Diana finds a wooden trunk in the back of a closet containing a colourful blanket, a large blue crystal, photos, and other items depicting her mother's past. STORY OUTLINE: Months later, she sees a similar blanket to Lillian's hanging on a fishing boat on the pier. Diana approaches Joey, the boat's captain. He tells her the blanket belongs to his grandmother, who lives on the island of KiaKai. She tells him that she thinks her mother is from there and wants to spread her ashes on Kia Kai. Joey agrees to take her to the island. As they sail the ocean, Diana is shocked and angry about the pollution in the water. Joey tells her that it comes from passing ships and foreign fishing boats and is the reason why the dolphins and whales no longer swim beside his boat. The cave community live is high on the cliffs. Joey introduces Diana to Mama, an older woman who founded the cave community on Kia Kai. When Diana shows Mama the photos, she realises that she is Lilian's daughter. Diana learns her mother was part of the island's tribal council, and when she left the island with the Crystal, the lighthouse shut off, causing a divide on the island. Hunter, Mama's estranged son, took advantage of the ship's wrecking on the rocks by salvaging the cargo. He became an angry, mean, greedy man after Lilian left him. Mama and Harry moved most of the Islanders to the caves on the far side of Kia Kai and established a peaceful community 30 years earlier. When Mama and Diana tend to the highland people after a Demon dog attack, they find a young, nonverbal girl tired up as bait. The villagers tell them her name is Belle because of the bells around her ankle that warn them when Malo, the giant blue spider, is nearby. They take her back to the cave community, where Belle quickly adjusts, learns to speak, and becomes a favourite of the children. Diana decides to stay on the island to set up a medical clinic; with the help of Joey and other islanders, they build the Midway clinic using beached shipping containers and beds and chairs made from recycled plastic bottles dredged from the sea. It is the beginning of Diana's new life on Kia Kai, an island of adventures and discoveries where nothing is as expected but full of magic and unpredictability’s. |
