“CITIZENs – The Choice Not To Fight” Written by YASUSHI FULUICHI (GENRE: Short Script Drama)

LOGLINE:

Troops invade a small town on the border.

SHORT SYNOPSIS:

The townspeople lay their state-issued weapons on the floor and instead of surrendering; they simply choose not to fight. They then say to the soldiers. We don't want to lose anyone, and we don't want anyone to get killed. We feel the same way about you as citizens.

STORY OUTLINE:

Armed with weapons, the townspeople gather in meeting halls and shout, "Defend our country!" “Let's defend our country!” “Let's fight to the last man!” Some insisted that they could not win, but their voices were drowned out. “It doesn't matter if we lose! It's all about the fight!” “We are Kamikaze!” When that voice was raised, "No!!!!!" It was as Japanese wife who shouted, "No. We Japanese were never taught that Kamikazes are heroes. They are victims of war and propaganda!” The group was quiet at these words.

Soon, a platoon of enemy troops arrives at the entrance of the town with a tank. The town people says "Let's talk.” “We need to talk!!” The platoon leader is stunned when a mother with a child says, "Follow me.”

They are led into a small hall where men are lined up with their hands in the air. When the line is broken, they see a pile of weapons in the back. A town elder walks up to the bewildered platoon and speaks to them. “No matter who has them or for whatever reason, they are tools for killing people. That's why we don't have them. We are citizens. There is no west, east, north, or south. Our desire is simple. We do not want to leave our loved ones. We don't want our precious homes destroyed. We want to shop at the market and eat properly. That's all.” One soldier in the platoon walks up to a pile of weapons and puts down his gun. One after another, the soldiers discard their weapons.

The platoon decides to march on, only to realize that no one has a weapon. The platoon leader laughs at the elder's warning, “That is the only way home. We also have families, just like you.” "We are citizens now.”
